Freedom Credit Union children holiday giving campaign

SPRINGFIELD — Freedom Credit Union is again holding its Cherish the Children 2022 campaign with the local Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF). Through Dec. 22, Freedom invites its members, staff and the entire community to select a child’s wish from the tree inside each of its branches and return to place the requested gift under the tree.

DCF provided Freedom with “wish lists” that included children’s names, ages and gift ideas. Freedom staff members created a tag for each child’s wish and hung it on their branch’s Christmas tree. Members of the public are encouraged to take a tag, purchase the gift the child requested, and then bring it back — unwrapped and with the tag attached — to place under the tree.

The goal is to provide gifts for 500 area children, the credit union said. The Hampshire County branch is located in Northampton.

Luther Belden named sustainable business of the year

HATFIELD — Luther Belden Inc. of Hatfield was named the 2022 Sustainable Business of the Year – Local Farm by the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts.

Luther Belden Inc. is a family-owned and operated farm that has been cultivating the land, caring for animals, and providing sustainable dairy products since 1661 across 13 generations of farmers. Today, the farm and accompanying farm stand are run by Darryl and Lucinda Williams, their son, Jackson, and his wife, Jill.

Environmental stewardship has been a central tenant throughout the farm’s 360-plus- year history. Among its highlights are:

■Operating an anaerobic methane digester that has been producing renewable energy to power the farm and the surrounding community since 2019. The digester also helps to address food waste from local restaurants.

■Using sustainable farming practices including no-till planting and cover crops to improve soil health.

■Participating in the Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Environmental Stewardship program and the Sustainable Farms Committee through Agri-Mark, a farmer-owned cooperative.

This year, Luther Belden Inc. is also a host farm for Discover Dairy’s Adopt a Cow program. They’re welcoming over 25,000 Massachusetts students onto their farm virtually to follow a calf as she grows throughout the school year and learn about her life on a New England dairy farm.

Luther Belden Inc. will be recognized at the Sustainable Business Awards Celebration on Jan. 26.
